The History of Pani Puri: From Ancient India to Your Plate

Introduction:
Ever wondered where the humble pani puri came from? This tangy, spicy, and crunchy street snack has been winning hearts across India for centuries. But its roots go deeper than you might think.

The Mythological Beginning:
Legend has it that pani puri was first made during the time of the Mahabharata. When Draupadi had to feed the Pandavas with limited ingredients, she creatively used leftover dough to make puris and filled them with spiced water and mashed potatoes — thus inventing an early version of pani puri.

From One Region to Many Names:
As pani puri traveled across India, it took on many names:

  • Golgappa in Delhi and North India
  • Puchka in Bengal
  • Pani ke Batashe in UP
  • Gup Chup in Odisha and Chhattisgarh

Each version uses slightly different fillings and flavored water, but the love remains the same.
